Private Jet Charter: A Complete Beginner’s Guide

Understand how charter works, what to compare, and how to prepare for your first flight.

Start with your route, dates, passengers and luggage. Then compare suitable aircraft, the complete trip price and the operating carrier.

Who arranges your flight?

You

Define the trip and review the proposal.

Charter broker

Arranges transportation with an operating carrier.

Operating carrier

Operates the aircraft and controls the flight.

01 / Plan

Start with your trip, not an aircraft.

Share the essentials so the options fit your journey.

  • Route and travel dates
  • Passengers and luggage
  • Timing flexibility
  • Pets or accessibility needs
Example trip brief
Four passengers. Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Friday to Sunday. Four overnight bags. Flexible departure time.

02 / Compare

Compare the complete journey.

Look beyond the aircraft and review the full picture.

Aircraft fitConfirm cabin, baggage space and the proposed operating plan.
Total trip priceCheck taxes, fees, inclusions and exclusions.
Clear responsibilitiesIdentify the seller and the actual operating carrier.
An hourly rate is only one part of a trip price.

03 / Book

Know what to check before you commit.

Review the details and terms so there are no surprises.

  • Named operating carrier and authorization
  • Cancellation and refund terms
  • Aircraft, airports and itinerary
  • Substitution and disruption arrangements
  • Complete price and payment requirements
The FAA recommends checking the charter operator’s authorization.

04 / Fly

Arrive prepared for your first flight.

Follow the departure instructions supplied for your confirmed itinerary.

  • Private terminal location
  • Passenger and luggage details
  • Arrival and identification instructions
  • Trip contact and special arrangements
Private flights usually leave from a private terminal (called an FBO), not the main airline terminal.

A few first-flight questions.

Do I need a membership to charter a jet?

No. On-demand charter can be arranged trip by trip at market rates. The JetNine Card and other programs have separate terms for frequent flyers.

Who actually operates my flight?

A licensed operating carrier flies the aircraft. JetNine arranges the flight as a broker; the operating carrier and tail number are stated on your trip sheet before you sign.

Is the price per aircraft or per passenger?

This guide concerns whole-aircraft charter for your party. Confirm the complete itinerary price and any passenger-dependent taxes or charges.

What should I prepare before requesting options?

Start with your route, dates, passenger count, luggage and flexibility. Include special requirements that could affect the aircraft or itinerary.

Your first trip starts with a clear plan.

Share your route, dates and requirements.
