Booking early buys options, not discounts. A week out, dispatch can usually offer the exact category you want at the airport you want; peak dates — holiday weekends, Aspen Saturdays in ski season, fight nights in Vegas — are the exception, and those can sell the local fleet out days ahead.
Booking late is still routine: same-day departures happen daily at major markets, limited only by crew duty time and what's parked nearby.
